ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442-9427 USA, FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536. Section 2 - DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE ============================== Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With regist- ration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Share- ware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the soft- ware, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a com- mercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it. Section 3 - DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT ============================== Users of WAV Wars must accept this disc- laimer of warranty: "WAV Wars is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantab- ility and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of WAV Wars." WAV Wars is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user for eval- uation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find that you are using WAV Wars and continue to use WAV Wars after 15 days, you must make a registration payment of $10.00 US (Plus shipping & handling if you are outside of the US, Canada or Mexico. See REGISTER.TXT for shipping charges.) to Blake Anderson at the address below. The $10.00 (US) registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time. See REGISTER.TXT for an order form. Commercial users of WAV Wars must register and pay for their copies of WAV Wars within 15 days of first use or their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting Blake Anderson. Anyone distributing WAV Wars for any kind of remuneration must first contact Blake Anderson at the address below for authoriza- tion. This authorization will be auto- matically granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distrib- utors may begin offering WAV Wars immediately (However Blake Anderson must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to- date with the latest version of WAV Wars.). You are encouraged to pass a copy of WAV Wars along to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest version of the WAV Wars program. Section 4 - Support Policy ============================== By registering you will receive three months of free, guaranteed support via email or snail mail (see the addresses below). However, comments and questions are always welcome. If for some reason the product goes out of date and is no longer supported, you will be given the option for a full refund as long as you are newly registering the program. (Obviously, if you register the program and maybe two years later it is no longer supported, you won't have the option for a refund.) Section 5 - What is Gained by Registering? ================================= Besides the three months of support, you will get the latest full-featured, registered version. And, of course, those nasty nag screens will be gone from both the program and the help file! Section 6 - Installation ============================== 1. Unzip the WAVWar21.zip 2. Execute Setup.exe 3. Follow the prompts. To uninstall, use Add/Remove programs from the Control Panel. Section 7 - System Requirements ============================== WAV Wars is a 32 bit program and will not run on Windows 3.x! Any PC running Windows95. 486 Recommended for speed. Sound Card Section 8 - Program Files ============================== WAVWARS21.EXE The program executable. WAVWARS.HLP The WAV Wars help file. README.TXT You're reading it. REGISTER.TXT Registration information and form. WAVS.DTA The setup file created by WAV Wars that stores setup info. (Created after 1st execution.) OTHERS... Misc. DLLs, etc., put in the systems and program directories during setup if necessary. Section 9 - History - Why WAV Wars? ============================== WAV Wars was created because of the sound file wars that occur at my office. Several people there have a collection of WAV files at the ready to do combat back and forth. The problem with using shortcuts to the sounds or other inconvient ways to play them is that it takes time to find the sound and then time for Windows 95 to fire up the sound player and play the sound...this caused delays in responses and was simply an inconvenience. I figured that other offices, etc., might participate in similar antics and decided to write an application to simplify and speed up the process. And since I couldn't find an existing application to my liking, WAV Wars was born. WAV Wars has already moved forward to version 2.1 all in a couple of weeks because of modification requests and ideas from around the office. Who knows where it will be in a few months... I feel that WAV Wars is probably going to stay the same for a while now and can safely be distributed without fear of you, the user, missing the newest version. The future... If there is a demand for an improved WAV Wars, I will heavily consider writing it. A couple ideas include: support for multiple configur- ation files to save several sets of sounds, capabilities to group sounds into categories or families to allow for more selections, blah, blah, blah... If you have an idea that you submit, and it gets written and implemented (and you're the first one or two or (?) to suggest it), I'll email you an upgrade upon completion for free. Fair enough? Section 9 - Bugs (Gasp!) ============================== WAV Wars was pretty heavily tested at the office and no problems were found. However, should you find a bug, please note what you were doing, the error if one was reported, and email me at the address below. I would appreciate any and all bug reports. I would like to make WAV Wars as error free as possible. One note (not a bug, but...): There in not a stop button because WAV Wars was meant to play little files. If it's really wanted, maybe I'll add it in a future version. Section 11 - Author Contact Addresses ============================== Snail Mail: Blake Anderson 558 E. 10345 S.
